Need More Breastfeeding Support?

Breastfeeding 101… Nipple pain… Bottle refusal…

You may find yourself asking a LOT of questions when it comes to breastfeeding. And that’s ok!

Because even though breastfeeding is one of the most natural things in the world… It doesn’t always come naturally.

Read on to learn more about how you can get  one-on-one tailored support for your breastfeeding journey by meeting with a trained lactation consultant.

What is a Lactation Consultant?

A lactation consultant is a trained professional that can offer you a wide range of support for your breastfeeding journey.

They may provide general support — like recommending breast pumps or teaching you different breastfeeding positions.

Or they may provide more tailored recommendations for your unique needs — like custom breastfeeding schedules or supplementation protocols.

Finding the Right Lactation Consultant

It’s important to know that there are different types of lactation consultants. And the level of support depends on the amount of training a lactation consultant has received.

Most likely, your local hospital, pregnancy center or birth center may have people on staff that are called “Lactation Consultants” or Breastfeeding Counselors (American Pregnancy).

These trained professionals generally offer high-level support and can help you navigate barriers that may stop you from breastfeeding your baby. For example, figuring out how to access a breast pump if you need one or ensuring you have a private place to pump when you return to work.

But their services and knowledge may be limited.

Benefits of an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant

We recommend that breastfeeding families work with a board-certified lactation consultant.

That’s because all IBCLCs have extensive education and training (Cleveland Clinic). These lactation consultants must pass a rigorous certification exam by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners

Their support goes beyond that of breastfeeding counselors or lactation educators. Not only are they super knowledgeable about up-to-date evidence-based practices… But they can navigate complex breastfeeding situations including those that may be high-risk.

This means that in addition to general support and information, these lactation consultants can help you prevent and manage all kinds of breastfeeding questions and concerns.

This will give you peace of mind that you’ll receive tailored solutions that help you reach your unique breastfeeding goals.

When Do You Need a Lactation Consultant?

If this is your first baby or first time breastfeeding, you may not have heard of a lactation consultant before. But you’re definitely going to want to be familiar with them as you begin your breastfeeding journey.

In most cases, you’ll meet a lactation consultant after your baby is born, oftentimes while you’re still in the hospital/birth center.

You can continue to meet with the lactation consultant at the place you delivered your baby in the first few weeks or months of your baby’s life. These first days and weeks when you and your baby are learning how to breastfeed are when you may need the most support.

Your child’s pediatrician or your OB-GYN/midwife may also have a lactation consultant on staff. This can be convenient for many parents to get breastfeeding support before or after one of your other postpartum visits.

Remember — it’s never too late to get help from a lactation consultant! Many parents find that they need additional support later in their postpartum period as they navigate new phases of their breastfeeding journey — like changes in milk supply, returning to work, or balancing nursing and solid foods.

Can You Visit a Lactation Consultant While Pregnant?

Yes! You can absolutely visit a lactation consultant while you’re pregnant! This is a great way to get a jump start on learning all about breastfeeding. This early prep can make you feel more confident and ready to nurse your baby once they arrive.

Many lactation consultants offer one-hour prenatal sessions to get to know your unique breastfeeding goals. They may also offer a breastfeeding 101 class (like THIS one) that can empower you with lots of amazing breastfeeding information.

Breastfeeding Questions? A Lactation Consultant Can Help

If you’re wondering what breastfeeding will be like… You’re struggling to nurse your newborn… Or you wonder if your baby is getting enough milk…

Meeting with a lactation consultant can help!

They can help you answer any and all of your breastfeeding questions to help make your feeding journey smoother and more enjoyable for you and your baby.

Some of the most common breastfeeding questions are (Cleveland Clinic):

  • What are the most comfortable breastfeeding positions? (And which ones are right for you?)
  • How do you get the best latch for your baby? (Without pain!)
  • What do you do if you experience milk supply issues? (Undersupply, oversupply, and how to adjust your supply)
  • What’s the best way to avoid nipple pain and ease sore nipples? (Learn to handle sore nipples, cracked nipples, painful nipples, and nipple blebs.)
  • What do you do about breast pain? (Breast engorgement, clogged milk ducts, breast inflammation aka. Mastitis.)
  • What should I do if my baby is experiencing low birth weight or slow weight gain
  • Does my baby have a tongue tie, lip tie, or cleft palate? (Get a proper diagnosis and tailored recommendations.)
  • What do you do about breast or bottle refusal?
  • How do you properly use an electric and/or manual breast pump?

How to Find San Diego Lactation Consultants

Many hospitals have lactation consultants on staff. They may check in on you after your baby is born (while you’re still in labor and delivery).

And while you may feel tired after giving birth, take advantage of this time with the lactation consultant. They can help you initiate breastfeeding and answer any of your breastfeeding questions.

The hospital lactation consultant may check in with you again once you’re recovering in the postpartum area (mother baby unit) and can help you set up follow up appointments once you return home.

If you aren’t sure if your hospital will provide a lactation consultant after you give birth, talk to your nurse or healthcare provider.

It’s also good to know that not all hospital lactation consultants are IBCLC’s. For this reason, many new parents choose to find their own lactation consultant.
